EU Energy Taxation Reform: A Green Dream in Limbo

The EU’s ambitious bid to reform energy taxation and promote a greener future is stalled by competing national interests. With a proposed kerosene levy for aviation seemingly shelved, the European Commission’s vision to tax fossil fuels and incentivise cleaner energy hangs in the balance.

The crux of the impasse?

Diverging priorities. Some nations, like France and Sweden, advocate for bold measures, while countries reliant on tourism—Italy, Greece, and Cyprus—fear increased costs could push travelers to non-EU destinations. Meanwhile, the aviation sector resists, citing its contributions through emissions trading schemes.

This battle exposes the complexities of balancing sustainability, economic competitiveness, and political realities. EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra calls for fairness, emphasising that outdated tax exemptions for aviation mean other sectors must shoulder more of the burden.

The reform's future remains precarious, and unanimity is required across all 27 EU members.
