Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a 33.3% equity interest in the Gwynt Glas floating offshore wind farm, joining existing partners EDF power solutions UK and Ireland and ESB in a three-way development consortium; this is Sumitomo's first floating offshore wind investment. The acquisition consideration is not disclosed.
Gwynt Glas is a proposed 1.5GW floating offshore wind farm located approximately 42 kilometres off the southwest coast of Pembrokeshire in the Celtic Sea, being developed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project. The project secured a Crown Estate seabed lease through Round 5 and signed an Agreement for Lease in October 2025; a DCO application is expected in September 2028, with full operation targeted for the late 2030s.
EDF power solutions UK and Ireland operates more than 50 renewable energy sites targeting 10GW of capacity in development or operation by 2035. ESB is Ireland's state-owned electricity utility, employing approximately 9,600 people and serving almost 1.9 million customer accounts, with offshore wind identified as a cornerstone of its net zero carbon strategy. Sumitomo Corporation (TYO: 8053) is a Japanese general trading company with global revenues of ¥6.9 trillion in FY2025 and has made offshore wind investments across the UK, Ireland and Europe since 2014.
The structural driver is floating offshore wind's capital requirements exceeding any single developer's balance sheet capacity at commercial scale. A 1.5GW floating wind farm, using technology not yet deployed commercially at this scale, is estimated to require capital expenditure in excess of £5 billion based on current benchmark costs of approximately £3.3 to £4 million per MW. The three-way consortium distributes that capital and risk across parties whose mandates are complementary: EDF provides development and operational experience, ESB contributes Celtic Sea market knowledge and Irish regulatory relationships, and Sumitomo provides Japanese institutional capital and global offshore wind project finance expertise.
The Irish angle is structurally embedded. ESB's involvement connects Ireland's state energy utility directly to what could become the largest single renewable energy infrastructure project in the Celtic Sea, a body of water that Irish energy policy also targets for its own floating wind development under Ireland's National Marine Planning Framework.
