Widnes is making waves in sustainable innovation with a new solar farm approved for a contaminated former golf course. Spanning 27 acres—the size of 15 football pitches—the solar microgrid will host 7,200 panels generating 4 megawatts of renewable energy. This project will power key municipal buildings, including a stadium and leisure center, showcasing how underutilized, polluted spaces can be reimagined for a greener future.

The once-toxic site, closed in 2004 due to arsenic contamination, will now spearhead the council's journey toward energy independence and environmental leadership. With this bold move, Widnes proves that sustainability isn’t just about reducing emissions—it’s about transforming challenges into opportunities.
