Vietnam’s plastics industry is entering a decisive phase of green transformation, with the Vietnam Plastics Association (VPA) leading efforts to integrate sustainability, eco-design, and circular economy principles into one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the VPA now represents more than 4,000 enterprises that collectively contribute 6–7% of Vietnam’s industrial output. The industry, valued at around $32 billion, is shifting from volume-based expansion to long-term, quality-driven growth powered by green innovation and automation.

Under Chairman Dinh Duc Thang’s leadership, the association has outlined five key priorities: sustainable growth, eco-design promotion, circular economy acceleration, improved certification and traceability, and stronger collaboration between government, business, and academia. These initiatives aim to build resilience, reduce import dependency, and position Vietnam’s plastics industry within global green supply chains.

The VPA is also working with ministries to standardise eco-design and EPR frameworks, support policy reforms, and pilot recycling models across local communities. This coordinated approach signals a clear intent to redefine industrial competitiveness through sustainability and innovation.

Vietnam’s plastics transformation exemplifies how emerging economies can pursue industrial expansion without compromising environmental goals, setting a model for Asia’s manufacturing sectors seeking sustainable growth.
