Shannon Airport has launched a €15 million terminal upgrade as the first phase of a €40 million investment programme focused on passenger experience, sustainability and infrastructure modernisation, the Shannon Airport Group announced.
According to Travel and Tour World, construction began in early 2026 with completion scheduled for May 2027. The terminal's 1970s section will be completely replaced with a modern, energy-efficient façade to improve the building's energy performance.
The modernisation will reduce reliance on fossil fuels by transitioning to electric heat pump technology and installing advanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Immigration and baggage halls will be extensively refurbished, with upgraded toilet facilities, improved lighting and new flooring.
A redesigned layout will streamline passenger flows, minimise queues and ensure more efficient movement through the terminal. Shannon Airport will introduce a dedicated entrance for European passengers, providing a quicker route to flights.
The airport will remove a 1950s link corridor, expected to save 62 tonnes of CO₂ annually by eliminating heating and cooling requirements. The modernised terminal supports the airport's transition towards a more sustainable future by reducing greenhouse gas emissions whilst meeting growing travel demand.
The €40 million investment programme includes upgrades to taxiways and completion of Blocks Y and Z, two new industrial units at Shannon Airport Business Park adding 100,000 square feet of flexible business space. These developments are expected to generate growth opportunities and support regional economic development.
Shannon Airport is enhancing passenger services with C3 security scanners, a new airport app and six new airbridges. The solar photovoltaic farm installed at the airport in 2025 contributes to clean energy commitments, marking Ireland's first on-airfield solar farm.
The airport has assured travellers of minimal disruption to flight operations during the construction period.
