In a rewind to the Green Awards 2026 earlier this year, the Shannon Airport Group took home both the Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year and the Green Large Organisation of the Year, recognised earlier this year for a sustainability programme that has embedded environmental responsibility across every dimension of its aviation and infrastructure operations, delivering measurable progress at regional and national scale.

The award, announced on 24 February 2026 at the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road, reflects a sustainable business that has positioned decarbonisation not as a peripheral commitment but as a strategic pillar of how it operates, grows, and supports the communities and regional economy it serves.

The Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year recognition acknowledged a comprehensive sustainability strategy supported by strong governance and measurable results. On the other hand, the Green Large Organisation of the Year award brought a sharper focus to the data-led rigour behind the programme.

On the Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year, judges stated: "This entrant demonstrated a comprehensive sustainability strategy embedded within its core aviation and infrastructure operations, supported by strong governance and measurable results. With impressive infrastructure upgrades, innovative approaches to transforming air travel, and a clear commitment to community and regional development, this organisation shows how public sector leadership can drive meaningful, long-term change."

On the Green Large Organisation of the Year, the panel added: "The Shannon Airport Group demonstrated a well-governed, data-led approach with clear targets, accountability, and broad stakeholder engagement. Innovation featured strongly, from electric flight initiatives to major infrastructure delivered alongside sensitive ecological management. Quantified results across energy, emissions, water, waste, and biodiversity, including a major reduction in embodied carbon through circular furniture reuse, showed ambition matched by delivery."

The Shannon Airport Group joins a cohort of Green Awards winners demonstrating that large public sector organisations, when driven by genuine ambition and structured accountability, have the capacity to set sustainability standards that raise the bar for green companies across every sector. The double win sets a compelling benchmark that entrants will look to as the 2027 awards cycle opens.
