Scientists explore clean energy from falling rain

What if your rooftop could harness electricity from the rain? Researchers in Singapore have developed a method that uses falling water droplets in a tube to generate clean energy—enough to power 12 LEDs. The key lies in a phenomenon called “plug flow”, where droplets form short water columns that produce electrical charge as they fall.

Unlike traditional hydropower, this approach works with small volumes of water, opening the door for decentralised, urban-friendly energy systems. With over 10% energy conversion efficiency already demonstrated, the potential for rain-powered electricity is no longer just science fiction.

Explore how this breakthrough could reshape clean energy strategies in your sustainability roadmap.
