Ryanair tops Ireland's carbon charts as aviation emissions soar

Ryanair has become Ireland’s leading carbon polluter, emitting over 12 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2024—a 17% jump year-on-year and more than the combined national emissions of Cyprus and Malta. While other sectors like electricity and industry made notable carbon cuts, aviation roared back past pre-Covid levels, with Ryanair leading the surge.

Meanwhile, the EU’s Emissions Trading System saw its biggest shake-up yet, adding shipping to the register, and Ireland’s food, pharma, and cement sectors remain under scrutiny. With carbon pricing on electricity imports starting next year, the cost of inaction is rising.
