Northumbrian Water pioneers turning waste into sustainable aviation fuel
Northumbrian Water is revolutionising waste treatment by converting domestic sewage into sustainable aviation fuel. The 'Green Machine' project uses algae to extract nutrients from wastewater, which are then transformed into biofuels. With a £6.5m investment, the project, located at the Bran Sands Treatment Works in Teesside, aims to reduce waste treatment environmental impacts and save up to £1m annually in operational costs. This initiative, supported by BrightWave and Ligoflux, aligns with the UK Government's 2030 targets for sustainable aviation fuel, showcasing a new frontier in both waste management and clean energy.
