Thirteen tourism businesses across Northern Ireland have successfully completed the fifth cohort of the Sustainable Tourism Business Programme, aimed at advancing environmental responsibility and social sustainability within the sector.
The 12-week programme, led by Tourism NI in partnership with The Tourism Space and Ulster University, guided participants through workshops, mentoring, field visits, and group sessions. The initiative encourages businesses to develop processes for managing water, waste, and energy, while also considering broader goals such as inclusion, biodiversity, community engagement, and regeneration.
Participants submitted detailed Sustainability Action Plans, committing to ongoing improvements in eco-friendly operations. On completion, each business received a Level 4 Certificate in Sustainable Tourism Practice in Destinations, accredited by Ulster University Business School.
Maria McAlister, Interim Experience Brand Development Manager at Tourism NI, highlighted the programme’s value in fostering a network of sustainable tourism advocates and strengthening practices across the region. She explained that the initiative supports businesses in protecting the local environment and ensuring Northern Ireland remains a vibrant place to work, live, and visit.
Tina O’Dwyer, CEO of The Tourism Space, noted the programme provided opportunities for companies to explore every dimension of sustainability and reimagine their role within the wider community. She emphasised that each participant leaves with a sustainability plan tailored to their operations and local context.
Businesses completing the programme include Lough Neagh Stories, Croga Tours, The Guildhall, Carrick-A-Rede Retreat, Friels Hospitality and Heritage Venue, Brack Tours, Indie Fude, Killeavy Castle Estate, Peacemakers Museum, Seamus Heaney Homeplace, Rabbit Hotel & Retreat, The Sound Healing Spa, and Ballyscullion Park.
