Kinecx Energy rebrands to accelerate Northern Ireland’s biomethane transition
Kinecx Energy, Northern Ireland’s gas network operator formerly known as firmus energy networks, has announced a full rebrand and strategic pivot to support the region’s transition to a lower-carbon energy system.
Unveiled during the company’s annual stakeholder briefing at the Galgorm Hotel and Spa in Ballymena, the rebrand signals a shift in focus following the 2024 sale of its retail arm. Chief Executive Officer Niall Martindale said the new identity reflects “a refreshed purpose and ambition for a lower-carbon future” while maintaining the company’s core commitment to safety and service.
With around £250 million already invested in infrastructure, Kinecx Energy’s network reaches 200,000 properties across Northern Ireland, serving 75,000 homes and businesses. The company aims to extend connections to the remaining 125,000 off-grid properties and scale up biomethane integration to cut reliance on natural gas. According to Kinecx, switching from oil to gas can reduce household emissions by up to 50 per cent.
A key milestone in this transition came in May 2025, when Kinecx signed its first biomethane connection agreement with Greenan Generation Ltd in County Londonderry. Once operational, the facility will supply around 8 per cent of the northwest’s gas demand and become the first biomethane injection point on Kinecx’s grid.
Mr Martindale described the agreement as “a milestone for renewable gas in Northern Ireland,” underscoring the company’s commitment to developing a cleaner, more resilient energy mix. Detailed decarbonisation plans are expected in Kinecx’s GD29 business strategy, due for release in 2027.
