Japan’s 2040 Climate Plan: Progress or Half-Measure?

Japan has approved a long-term climate, energy, and industrial policy roadmap through 2040, aiming to cut emissions by 60% from 2013 levels by 2035 and 73% by 2040. The plan also targets 50% renewable energy and 20% nuclear power in the electricity mix by 2040. While these policies promise stability for businesses, they come with challenges—including stalled nuclear restarts, offshore wind setbacks, and geopolitical uncertainty.
