Hydrogen-powered cruise ships signal a turning point for maritime sustainability

Viking and Fincantieri are charting new territory with the Viking Libra, the world’s first cruise ship to run on hydrogen stored entirely onboard. Set for launch in 2026, this 239-metre vessel will operate emissions-free, using advanced PEM fuel cells and modular hydrogen storage that solves key supply chain challenges.

More than a one-off innovation, this is the start of a scalable fleet shift. Sister ship Viking Astrea is already under construction, and multiple future builds are in the pipeline. It’s a bold bet on hydrogen—and a wake-up call for any industry betting on carbon-heavy status quo.
