Once a symbol of environmental damage, Bristol’s Cheese Lane Shot Tower, a Grade II-listed office block, has transformed into a beacon of sustainability. With funding from the West of England Combined Authority, the building has undergone a remarkable retrofit, including low-energy LED lighting and solar panels, propelling it toward a net-zero emissions future.

Originally built in the 1960s for the lead shot industry, the tower's history is steeped in pollution. It produced toxic chemicals until lead shot manufacturing was banned in the 1990s. Today, it houses the Workforce Development Trust, which supports sustainability in public services.

As CEO John Rogers aptly states, “It’s ironic that a building once notorious for environmental harm can now stand as a symbol of a greener future.”

This transformation showcases how businesses can redefine their legacy through sustainability, leveraging innovation and funding to lead toward a cleaner economy.
