Xylem advances circular economy at world’s largest wastewater pump factory
At Xylem’s Emmaboda facility in southern Sweden, circularity is embedded across operations. The on-site foundry sources over 85% of its iron from recycled or reclaimed materials, while precision recycling processes recover and reuse everything from cast iron shavings to defective parts—cutting reliance on virgin raw materials without compromising quality.
Water is also managed in a closed loop. A purpose-built treatment plant recycles 100% of the site’s 20 million litres of process water each year, reducing pressure on local resources and ensuring resilient operations even in dry periods.
With more than 1,350 employees producing 160,000 Flygt pumps annually, Emmaboda demonstrates how industrial-scale manufacturing can align efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.
