UK leads Europe in EV sales but policy gaps risk stalling momentum

The UK has overtaken all of Europe in electric vehicle sales, yet the market’s growth is hitting avoidable roadblocks. A lack of financial incentives, confusing taxation, and lingering concerns about charging infrastructure are dampening consumer uptake—especially as the 2030 petrol and diesel ban approaches.

While range anxiety is largely outdated, affordability remains a key barrier. Calls are mounting for smarter fiscal policies: slashing VAT on public charging, reintroducing purchase incentives, and rethinking new vehicle excise duties. Without action, the UK risks losing its EV edge just as demand begins to surge globally.
