Renewables take the lead as energy demand surges

Soaring global temperatures pushed electricity demand up 2.2% in 2024, but renewables stepped up, covering most of the growth. Solar, wind, and nuclear are breaking the link between emissions and economic expansion, even as data centres, EVs, and cooling needs drive consumption higher.

Europe hit a milestone with renewables generating nearly half its electricity, while global CO2 emissions rose 0.8%. The takeaway is clear: clean energy is scaling fast, but climate pressures remain a challenge.
