Mace and AtkinsRéalis to drive Irish grid transformation
Mace and AtkinsRéalis have been appointed to a five-year framework that is set to deliver one of Ireland’s most ambitious infrastructure investments to date. The joint venture will modernise the country’s electricity transmission system, with a clear mandate to advance net zero ambitions by 2050.
The partnership was formed under the ENQEIR885 Engineering Design, Planning and Project Management Framework, with EirGrid requiring a single-entity delivery model. Mace will oversee project management, risk and commercial services, while AtkinsRéalis will contribute detailed engineering, environmental and stakeholder expertise.
Both firms have a strong track record of collaboration with EirGrid, having previously supported key grid development and customer connection projects. Their new mandate extends to offshore renewable programmes, positioning the joint venture at the centre of Ireland’s strategy to harness wind power and other renewable sources.
Executives from both companies highlighted the scale of the opportunity, noting the programme’s role in reinforcing infrastructure to support transport, housing and utilities growth. With Ireland’s population and business needs expanding, the investment is seen as both a national energy security measure and a catalyst for broader economic resilience.
The initiative reflects a wider trend where infrastructure modernisation is inseparable from climate commitments. The critical question now is whether the scale and speed of delivery can match Ireland’s climate and growth objectives.
