Irish infrastructure contractor Jons Civil Engineering Company has reduced generator-related carbon emissions by up to 90% after transitioning from fossil diesel to ISCC-certified hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) supplied by Tria Energy, delivering immediate decarbonisation across active construction sites without operational disruption.

As reported by Fuel Oil News, HVO's drop-in compatibility meant no modifications were required to existing generators or fuel infrastructure, enabling rapid deployment across projects. Operational benefits reported include cleaner combustion, reduced exhaust odour, and verified emissions savings backed by ISCC-certified supply chains.

Kara Lacey, sustainability manager at Jons Civil, said: "Reliable temporary power is non-negotiable for our projects, but so is reducing our environmental impact. Introducing HVO enables us to deliver immediate carbon reductions without compromising performance."

Patrick Kirby, CEO of Tria Energy, said the project demonstrates the speed at which generator decarbonisation can be achieved in practice. "This shows how HVO can be implemented quickly, safely and at scale while maintaining reliable site power," he said.

Jons Civil Engineering is the first company in Ireland to achieve Level 4 on the Carbon Ladder in Ireland and the UK, reflecting a structured approach to emissions reduction across its site operations. The HVO transition forms part of a broader decarbonisation programme targeting energy-intensive activities where electrification remains technically or logistically challenging.

The case reflects growing momentum for HVO among construction and infrastructure contractors facing mounting pressure to demonstrate measurable near-term emissions reductions. Unlike electrification or hydrogen alternatives, HVO requires no capital investment in new equipment, making it an accessible transitional option for organisations managing large temporary power requirements across multiple concurrent sites.
