Ireland's solar energy sector reached a historic milestone on 24 April 2026, generating 1GW of electricity for the first time, with output peaking at 1,074MW within a total national generation of 3,124MW at midday.
As reported by Silicon Republic, solar delivered 34.4% of electricity generation in the Republic of Ireland at that moment, with a further 523MW of imports flowing via the Greenlink interconnector. The record arrives just over a month after solar generation met nearly a quarter of peak electricity demand across the island on 21 March.
Ronan Power, CEO of Solar Ireland, said the milestone underscores the urgency of scaling storage and grid infrastructure alongside generation capacity. "We are now seeing strong solar generation during the middle of the day. The challenge is making sure that energy can be used when demand is highest. Storage is key to that. It allows us to shift excess daytime generation into the evening peak, reduce curtailment, and get more value from the clean electricity we are already producing."
Power added that faster grid connections, clearer frameworks for hybrid projects, and improved system coordination were essential to meeting Ireland's renewable targets. "If we are serious about hitting our renewable targets, storage and grid infrastructure need to scale alongside generation," he said.
More than 177,000 homes and businesses across Ireland now generate their own electricity through rooftop solar, reducing demand on the national grid. Enquiries for rooftop installations have increased by between 10% and 25% in recent weeks, with growing interest in solar systems paired with battery storage.
Ireland is targeting 8GW of solar capacity and 22GW from renewables overall by 2030. In March, the European Investment Bank committed a €100 million project finance loan to support four new utility-scale solar projects across Clare, Wicklow, Wexford, and Tipperary, forming part of a total €260 million investment expected to generate approximately 367GWh of clean electricity annually.
