As AI demand soars, so does its hidden cost — water. Data centres, the backbone of AI, guzzle vast amounts for cooling, with projections showing AI could soon consume as much water annually as the entire US drinking supply.

Ecolab is tackling this head-on. By embedding AI into its own operations, it’s helping data centres conserve water without compromising profitability. Their goal? To save 300 billion gallons annually by 2030 — enough for a billion people.

The company’s partnership with Digital Realty brings AI-powered water optimisation to 35 US data centres, setting a precedent for global adoption and reinforcing the business case for sustainable digital infrastructure.

AI could be both the challenge and the solution. The question is, which future will we choose?
