Ireland’s enterprise sustainability support architecture has reached a new level of ambition. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment published its Climate Action Roadmap in October 2025, confirming that Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland have developed a €300 million Environmental Aid Scheme that allocated €28.8 million and €28.5 million respectively in environmental aid in 2024. The Green Transition Fund has allocated €11.4 million to 212 projects. For green business executives across manufacturing, food processing and pharma, the Roadmap maps Ireland’s most comprehensive enterprise sustainability support package.
Enterprise Ireland’s decarbonisation supports have benefited more than 400 Irish companies since June 2022, reducing CO₂ emissions by an estimated 130,000 tonnes. IDA Ireland has worked with FDI clients to progress decarbonisation plans. The dimensions most relevant to sustainability companies are the Climate Planning Fund for Business, the Enterprise Emissions Reduction Investment Fund and the €300 million Environmental Aid Scheme.
The Climate Planning Fund for Business is the most immediately deployable support. It funds carbon footprinting, energy efficiency assessments and sustainability strategy development — the foundational work companies need before capital decarbonisation investment. The fund has two levels: an initial planning grant for early-stage companies and a deeper strategic level for companies integrating climate action into their overall business strategy and multi-annual investment plan.
The Enterprise Emissions Reduction Investment Fund is the most commercially significant capital mechanism in the Roadmap. It supports capital investments in carbon abatement technologies for manufacturing businesses, co-funding projects that would otherwise face commercial viability challenges. The €300 million Environmental Aid Scheme extends this capacity, giving green companies in energy, technology and advanced manufacturing the certainty needed to plan major decarbonisation programmes.
The IDA Ireland dimension confirms a significant shift in how FDI is being conditioned on sustainability performance. IDA Ireland’s €28.5 million in Environmental Aid in 2024 reflects the expectation that Ireland’s FDI proposition must include a credible pathway to carbon neutrality. Environmental innovation in manufacturing and pharmaceutical production is increasingly the differentiating factor in FDI site selection. For sustainability consultancies and engineering firms, the Roadmap confirms a growing and funded revenue stream.
Three actions would help sustainable business organisations capitalise. First, any Enterprise Ireland or IDA Ireland client company that has not yet completed a carbon footprint assessment should apply for Climate Planning Fund support in 2026. Second, manufacturing and food processing companies with capital-intensive decarbonisation investments planned should engage with Enterprise Ireland’s Environmental Aid Scheme before finalising their investment business cases. Third, sustainability consultancies and energy auditors should register as approved suppliers under the Climate Planning Fund to access the funded advisory pipeline.
The DETE Climate Action Roadmap confirms that sustainability excellence in Irish enterprise is a commercially supported, government-funded investment programme. Globally, the green transition accelerates in economies where enterprise decarbonisation support is integrated, well-funded and accessible. Ireland’s Green Transition Fund, Environmental Aid Scheme and Climate Planning Fund architecture give Irish enterprise one of the most comprehensive publicly funded decarbonisation frameworks in the EU. The opportunity is open and the commercial case for engagement is strong.
