US-based nuclear energy company Constellation Energy Corporation has completed a $90 million (approximately €75.6 million) refuelling and maintenance outage at its Limerick Clean Energy Center in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, delivering upgrades designed to extend the long-term reliability of Unit 1 and ensure continued emissions-free electricity production.

As reported by Yahoo Finance, approximately 1,400 skilled tradespeople worked on-site for more than 20 days during the outage, contributing to regional economic activity through increased demand for local lodging, restaurants, and services. Workers also engaged in charitable fundraising and ongoing support for local nonprofits throughout the project period.

The Limerick facility operates two boiling water reactors and provides large-scale power generation capacity for the surrounding region, supporting hundreds of permanent local jobs alongside the significant temporary workforce mobilised during the outage period.

Constellation Energy representatives emphasised that the investment strengthens both plant performance and regional economic stability, reinforcing the long-term role of nuclear energy in providing reliable, emissions-free baseload power at scale.

The completion of the Limerick upgrade reflects broader momentum across the US nuclear sector, where operators are directing significant capital into life extension and reliability programmes as nuclear energy's contribution to grid decarbonisation gains renewed political, regulatory, and commercial backing.
