Centrica Energy, in collaboration with Bord Gáis Energy, has signed a long-term offtake and route-to-market agreement with Stream BioEnergy for a biomethane facility near Cork that will become Ireland's largest plant processing municipal food and garden waste upon its operational launch in 2027.
As reported by Centrica, the facility will process 90,000 tonnes per year of domestic and commercial food and garden waste to generate 80GWh of unsubsidised biomethane annually, which will be injected directly into the Irish gas grid. Under the agreement, Centrica Energy will offtake 100% of the biomethane produced and manage the associated green certificates to ensure the renewable gas reaches end users efficiently.
Cassim Mangerah, managing director of Centrica Energy, said: "By converting organic waste into biomethane, the project supports a circular economy and reduces reliance on fossil fuels, making it a truly sustainable energy solution. Centrica Energy's role in managing the full offtake and certificates ensures that biomethane can be brought to market efficiently, delivering real value to Irish consumers and contributing to a lower-carbon future."
Kevin Fitzduff, co-founder of Stream BioEnergy, said the company was proud to have started construction on one of Ireland's largest biomethane facilities, a key part of Ireland's decarbonisation journey, welcoming the support of investors and commercial counterparties.
Bord Gáis Energy, Centrica's Irish energy supply business, will play a central role in delivering the biomethane to the Irish market, combining Centrica's trading capabilities and grid infrastructure with established domestic market reach.
Stream BioEnergy is a leading developer of biogas plants in Ireland, and the Cork facility represents a significant scaling of sustainable gas production from organic waste streams at a time when Ireland's biomethane sector remains substantially below its 5.7 TWh national target for 2030.
