Capital Dynamics has acquired a ready-to-build 170MW/680MWh battery energy storage project at Knockanure, Co. Kerry from a group of private shareholders, marking the Swiss asset manager's first transaction in the Republic of Ireland; the acquisition consideration is not publicly disclosed, and the project is in procurement and delivery planning following planning consent granted in October 2025.

Capital Dynamics is a Zurich-headquartered global private asset management firm with $15 billion in assets under management across clean energy, private equity and private credit, operating from 14 offices globally. In March 2026, Capital Dynamics established a £100 million joint venture with Solo Renewables for the 150MW/1,200MWh Islandmagee LDES project in Co. Antrim, which received planning approval in February 2026.

The Knockanure project connects to the neighbouring 110kV substation and has been classified by EirGrid as a long-duration energy storage solution, a classification applying to four-hour-plus duration systems. Capital Dynamics acquired the project from a group of private shareholders who developed the project to ready-to-build stage, reflecting a common Irish BESS market dynamic where development-stage assets are sold before construction to institutional capital with the balance sheet to deliver them.

The structural driver is Ireland's LDES deficit at a moment when the grid requires it most urgently. Ireland targets 80% renewable electricity by 2030 and its grid is already experiencing rising curtailment rates as wind and solar periodically exceeds transmission capacity. Research by Cornwall Insight estimates Ireland's LDES capacity needs to reach approximately 2.4GW by 2030; the current operational LDES stock stands at approximately 0.29GW.

The recent reduction in grid fees for energy storage, storage assets now pay only Generation TUoS charges, directly improves project economics for ready-to-build assets like Knockanure, reducing the annual grid cost burden that previously disadvantaged BESS relative to conventional generation.

Capital Dynamics' all-island LDES strategy, Republic project in Kerry, Northern Ireland JV in Antrim, positions it across both regulatory markets in the Irish Single Electricity Market, enabling portfolio optimisation across EirGrid and SONI dispatch and capacity payment mechanisms.
