Can the Military Go Green? The Battle to Tackle Emissions While Ensuring Security

The defense sector is one of the world’s largest polluters, responsible for an estimated 5.5% of global emissions. While military budgets are rising, climate adaptation within the sector is lagging despite the urgent need for security and sustainability. Militaries are starting to take action, adopting hybrid-electric systems, renewable energy solutions, and training simulators to cut fuel use and emissions.

The push for greener practices also aligns with strategic advantages, such as stealth benefits and operational efficiency. However, sustainability remains secondary for many as climate action competes with the pressures of global security threats.

The question remains: Can the military reconcile its mission with its environmental footprint before it’s too late?
