Allianz UK has introduced Renewable Energy Select, a single operational policy covering several renewable and grid-balancing technologies at the same site. The product answers the rise of mixed-technology sites, such as solar farms with battery storage, which previously often needed a separate wording for each technology.

Allianz UK is the British arm of Munich-based Allianz SE. It reported operating profit of £476.2 million on total business volume of £4.64 billion for 2025, with a combined operating ratio of 93.0%. Allianz SE reported total business volume of €186.9 billion and operating profit of €17.4 billion for the same year.

The structural driver is the co-location of battery storage with wind and solar generation, which multiplies the technologies, supply chains and grid connections on one site. Renewable Energy Select covers onshore wind, ground-mounted solar and hydro, biomass and anaerobic digestion, battery energy storage and Slow Reserve, the balancing service that replaced the legacy Short Term Operating Reserve. Allianz says a single policy makes it simpler for brokers to arrange cover as customers’ projects and portfolios grow.

Public and products liability cover is available up to £5 million and employers’ liability up to £10 million. The policy includes alterations, additions and improvements up to £1 million per period, temporary removal up to £100,000, removal of debris and professional fees up to £50,000 and commercial legal expenses up to £100,000 for any one event. Construction all risks cover remains available, so brokers can arrange protection from construction through to operation.

The proposition is backed by Allianz’s engineering inspection and risk prevention services, including a UK network of more than 750 engineer surveyors and renewable energy expertise across more than 70 countries. The cover arrives as renewables generated 52.1% of UK electricity in 2025.

Karen Boothroyd, head of construction, engineering and energy for UK markets at Allianz UK, said “the UK’s transition to renewable energy brings significant opportunities, but the risks are changing too.” She said different technologies carry different risks, and that connections between equipment, supply chains and the grid mean a problem in one area can have wider consequences.

For the sector, the policy shows insurers restructuring cover around multi-technology sites, reducing the gaps and overlaps that arise when each technology sits under its own wording.
